Laundry Room Makeover 2.0...

Back in January, I was at Home Depot and spotted some tiles and instantly FELL IN LOVE. I knew I wanted them in my house, but where? If you have been following along, I posted our Laundry Room makeover (You can see that HERE) this past fall. I had no plans to update anything in that space until I spotted the tiles. I knew they would be perfect in our laundry room!  

So we decided to rip out the vinyl and put in new tile flooring. It turned into a longer process because I then decided a backsplash would look good (My husband is a SAINT). On top of adding a tile backsplash and new floors, I really did not like the placement of our washing machine hookups. They were too high and an eye sore to look at. Thankfully, my husband was on board with lowering the hookups so that it would not be such an eye sore on that wall. I think it made such a difference! It really shows off the backsplash!

This is our laundry room 2.0! I love how it turned out!

Our Laundry Room DIY...

Over the last few months we have been updating our laundry room. It has been a slow process. I honestly wish I would have taken a before photo. Just imagine a wire rack going across the top of the washer and dryer. We do not have a large laundry room, but I really wanted to make use of the space. 

When we got new countertops installed this past summer, we decided to use the extra cabinet we had and install a sink in our laundry room.   We also used the same granite we have in the kitchen for the sink in the laundry room. To get more use out of the space, we got rid of the wire rack and installed cabinets and floating shelves. I wish I could say I did most of the work, but my handy husband made the floating shelves, installed the molding around the cabinet and window and did the plumbing. To top it off, we added he added a new light fixture.  I did all the picking our and design, he did all the handy work. On the other side of the wall, we have this awesome drying rack. I love that I can fold it up when we are not using it. 

I would like to tile the back of the washer and dryer wall, but I am content with where we are at with this room right now.

DIY Faux Wood Beams…

Hope you had a great weekend! 

Last month I decided that I wanted to add more character to our house. I saw the faux beams while watching HGTV's Smart Home and I knew I wanted it to be my next project. Real beams are expensive so I looked at the DIY version. We decided to add them to our front room.

This is what the ceiling looked like before. 

To get started, we determined how many beams we wanted and measured/spaced them out evenly. We used chalk line to mark where each beam would go. We decided on four beams. 

Next, we bought our wood. Since we wanted four beams, we needed 8 1x6, and 4 1x 4. We bought the cheapest wood at Home Dept. I wanted a rustic look, so the more beat up the wood the better. 

After getting the wood home, we beat it up. I hit with a hammer, chain, and nails to give it a beat up look. Above is what it looked like after.

Once I got the look I wanted, we stained the wood. I chose the color Dark Walnut. I love how this color turned out.

While the stain was drying, my husband installed supports to help keep the beams secured to the ceiling. We purchased 4 2x4. He cut, nailed, and spaced them out across the joists in the ceiling.

After the stain dried, we built our faux beams. The two 1x6 boards were used on the outside and for the middle we used one 1x4. I wanted a little dimension, so we gave the beam a little bit of a lip. You can see how I spaced it above. 

After we put it together, we had to use clamps to keep the wood from moving. It made it much easier to nail. We nailed about every 5 inches along to beam. One side of the 1x6 was nailed to the 1x4. Then we nailed the other side to the 1x4.

After we constructed the beams, we had to stain the inside lip of each beam. 

Once the stain dried, we nailed each beam to the 2x4 supports.

DIY Patriotic Wreath…

A few weeks ago I made this patriotic wreath! I took a few pictures as I made it. It is super easy to make, and I bought everything on SALE! Everything was purchased from JoAnn Fabric and Craft Store. They always have coupons, so make sure to check your phone so that you can see what deals they have before you check out. 

To begin, I purchased the stems that I wanted to use. 

Here is what I purchased:

10 white bud stems. 

5 Red Ranunculus stems

 1 Grapevine wreath

Ribbon 

I was not sure what I wanted to do, so I started with the white floral stems. I wrapped them in the grapevine wreath so that they were nice at tight. 

I kept adding more and more stems. I used 5 stems on this side. 

Once I got the white stems in, I started to add a pop of red. I cut some of the red ranunculus to separate it a bit more. I used wire cutters to cut the stems. 

This is how the first side turned out.  I repeated the same technique on the other side of the wreath.

You will need a hot glue gun, ribbon of your choice, wire, and wire cutters. 

  You need to cut 4 strips of ribbon first.

1 30 inch strip

1 20 inch strip

1 15 inch strip

1 10 inch strip

Once you cut, take the 30 inch and the 15 inch strip. Hot glue the end of the strips together. You will have two just like the picture below. 

Place the 15 inch strip on top of the 30 inch strip and cinch at the middle. It will look like the photo below. 

 Using wire, tie them together at the middle. Cut any extra wire. 

 You will then add your 20 inch strip behind the 30 inch strip. Use wire to attach and trim off any extras. For some reason, I skipped a picture on this part! Sorry!

 To attach the bow, use wire and wrap around wreath. Cut off any extra. 

I made a few extra bows for the lanterns.

Affordable Bathroom Update…

Hello Tuesday! Last week, it rained and rained. Since I was stuck inside, I decided that I would paint      one of our bathrooms that was in desperate need of love! It has sat neglected since we moved in our house. At first, I was just going to paint the walls, but that changed quickly. Thanks to this picture that I found on Pinterest!

The bathroom was not in terrible shape. It just needed some TLC.

I painted the walls of the bathroom the same as our laundry and front room in our house. It is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter.

The cabinets were my favorite part! I used the color Evening Dove by Benjamin Moore. They have a dark gray/blue tone to them! I purchased the cabinet paint that Benjamin Moore sells. It goes on smooth and required me to only lightly sand before painting.

The day we moved in, I knew that I wanted to board and batten the long wall in this bathroom. We have one room in our house already using this style of wainscoting. This was very easy to install and I plan to do a post on this separately! The trim color is what the rest of our house is.

AFTER

New paint, mirrors, and knobs made all the difference in this bathroom. We added some shelves and I also purchased some baskets and a glass jar to fill with bath bombs. We would like to eventually add more lighting and a new light fixture to this bathroom, but it is perfect for now!
